Can you integrate a Wyze Home Monitoring System and Nest x Yale lock?

On our most recent IoT Podcast episode, Noah called in to our voicemail hotline with a smart home integration question. Noah uses a Wyze Home Monitory System and a Nest x Yale lock in his smart home. He wants to disarm the Wyze alarm system when typing in the numeric code on the Nest x Yale keypad, which unlocks the door.

You’d think that wouldn’t be hard. But it is difficult, if not downright impossible from a native integration standpoint.

I have the same smart lock on my front door that Noah has and frankly, it doesn’t work with much these days. When the “Works with Nest” platform was around, I was able to integrate the lock with other devices. However, that platform was changed to “Works with Google” and has rendered many prior Nest integrations inoperable.

Natively, there’s no current way to connect Wyze products with a Nest lock these days. So we looked into third-party options before coming up short. 

IFTTT came to mind and while that automation service does support both Wyze and Nest, it doesn’t support these particular products. You can use IFTTT with Wyze cameras or sensors but not on the security system. And you can connect Nest thermostats with other non-Nest devices, but you can’t use IFTTT with Nest locks.

Google did quietly announce a potential solution at its Google I/O 2021 event last week that’s worth a mention. It’s called the Device Access Console. 

We looked into this and found that it’s not ideal. You have to pay a one-time developer fee of $5, for starters. Then you can (theoretically) create a Nest integration on your own but… Google doesn’t provide much in the way of examples or instructions. Still, this may be worth a look.

For now, Noah may want to add a Wyze keypad (or install one if he has it already) near the entrance with the Nest lock.

No, it won’t automatically disable the alarm when the Nest keycode is entered but it would disarm the system with an alphanumeric code. Yes, a second one. It’s either that or use the Wyze mobile app to manually disarm the system on a phone when approaching that door with the Nest x Yale lock.

Our hope is that the “Works with Google” platform ramps up in the near future and that Wyze makes an effort to take advantage of that. For now? A lack of integrations is keeping the door locked on the smart home.
