The Eclipse Foundation’s IoT developer survey is out.
For the third year, the Eclipse Foundation has quizzed developers about their thoughts, platforms and programming languages associated with the internet of things. Most surprising to me was that interoperability seems to be less of a concern for developers in 2017 than it was in 2015 and 2016. Security remains the top concern for developers in IoT overall for the third consecutive year. Other bits of news from the survey worth mentioning include the growth of Bluetooth, LoRa and 6LoWPAN as connectivity technologies. Meanwhile, developers aren’t keen on Thread. I’ve actually heard this from several folks building connected products and services. Thread is not really a contender.
There is a lot of good stuff in this survey, including the top cloud providers, the top chip architectures for devices and gateways, and details on which protocols and programming languages matter for the internet of things. Everyone should take a look.
