Event: Let’s talk about RF Sensing

The internet of things needs more context. And to deliver that context, computers need more senses. This is why I’ve been really excited about the potential to use existing radios and new radios to give computers a better understanding of what’s going on without relying on cameras. Right now, Google is using radar to track how well people sleep at night, while Apple is using ultrawideband to help locate things and people nearby.

The IEEE and several companies are investing in a layer of sensing capabilities on top of the Wi-Fi communication standard that should be certified in 2024, and cheaper, smaller lidar is making its way downmarket to consumer devices. This represents a rich opportunity for engineers and developers to add new features and capabilities to their smart devices. But each technology has its tradeoffs and helping y’all understand those tradeoffs is why I brought together four very smart people to explain what’s happening today in the world of RF sensing.

We’ll have Chris Beg from Cognitive Systems, who is working to build the IEEE 802.11bf standard for Wi-Fi sensing, Ramona Marfievici from Digital Catapult and Bill Flaherty of Very walking you through various  RF and hardware design considerations and Marcus Da Silva from NI, who can discuss technical issues associated with most of these technologies in depth. You’re going to learn a lot!

We’ll hold this free panel Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 11 am ET/8 am PT. We’ll discuss the different options available today and what’s coming tomorrow. We’ll also explain when to use each option based on what you’d like to accomplish. Some technologies are better for measuring broad movements, while others measure how fast something is changing positions. So, register to learn how each technology will work for your future products and plans.
