On our most recent IoT Podcast, Jeff called into our voicemail hotline and asked about something that I too have been struggling with: smart speaker overload. By overload, I don’t mean having too many smart speakers but having these devices taking up space all around the house. It turns out, you can reduce that smart speaker clutter and regain space on your tables, desks, and countertops for a relatively small investment.
We suggested that Jeff look into either ceiling or wall mounts for his devices to free up space. There are a number of options to choose from; just search Amazon for “smart speaker mounts” or “smart speaker ceiling mounts” and you’ll see dozens of solutions ranging from $8 to $50, depending on your choice.
The wall mounts are generally much less expensive and don’t require any tricky installation steps. These just plug into an existing outlet and have a holder that attaches to an Echo Dot or Home Mini speaker. I like the idea of these because you can take them with you if you ever move, or if you want to relocate a speaker to another room.
The more expensive solution is a ceiling mount and it will likely require some cutting and wiring on your part. However, you can choose exactly where you’re placing your speaker which can provide better sound quality throughout your room.
If you’re in the market to replace your old smoke detectors, it’s actually easier to ceiling mount that digital assistant: Look to FirstAlert, which has options with built-in speakers and microphones for Alexa now and Google in the future. This option brings a plug-and-play approach although it’s going to be the most expensive solution out of the bunch.
