Learn more about Bluetooth 5 at Bluetooth World (sponsored)

ABI Research forecasts that by 2021 there will be 48 billion devices connected to the internet, and 30 percent of those devices will be Bluetooth® devices. Bluetooth low energy continues to advance as a key enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT). With the release of Bluetooth 5, the possibilities only grow greater. With 4x range, 2x speed and 8x broadcasting message capacity, Bluetooth 5 delivers key capabilities and enables IoT scenarios that meet the market demand of today and tomorrow.

The Smart Home sector is one example and it has, to a degree, informed the key goals behind Bluetooth 5 to provide robust, reliable connections that make full-home, building, and outdoor use cases a reality. A true smart home must deliver the convenience, efficiencies, and reliability that consumer demand. Beyond just having sensors and wireless devices in every room, the lighting system, heating and air conditioning system, and other systems must be able to communicate with each other both in and out of the house, through physical barriers, and across large spaces. With Bluetooth 5, constant connection, monitoring, and control of home-based Bluetooth sensors in door locks, lights, or other household appliances will enable users to benefit from the smart home.

Bluetooth 5 seeks to improve interoperability, enable simple and effortless interactions across a vast range of connected devices, and create more possibilities for companies and developers to bring about a more accessible Internet of Things (IoT).
