Yale’s new lock is for doors without a deadbolt

No deadbolt? No problem. Yale now has a lock for you. Image courtesy of Yale.

Yale just released a connected lock for doors that don’t have deadbolts but still might benefit from a keypad and smarts. Examples include a side door to the garage, or a door between the house and the garage — even an Airbnb situation, where you want to lock up supplies or a room full of stuff.

It’s not cheap. The non-connected version that only has a keypad is $149 and the connected version costs between $199 and $299, depending on how it connects and if you want a touchscreen keypad or a physical keypad. But while it feels pricey, for some people the ability to remotely ensure their doors are locked is priceless.

Finally, the product page of the web site features locks that are “Connected by August,” which offers some insight into the value that the August acquisition brings to Assa Abloy, the company that makes Yale locks. While the most recent August Doorbell was quickly pulled from the market, the company’s door locks are still for sale. But based on these listings, it’s the August app and August’s Bluetooth connection management, plus August’s back-end integration expertise, that Assa Abloy will use.
